OBJECTIVES
At the conclusion of this
educational activity, the participant should be able to:
- Design a tailored education
program for their trainees
- Adapt the NICU-BKAT3
for their setting and be able to assess their nursing staff’s readiness
to manage RDS
- Explain the pathophysiology
underlying secondary surfactant deficiency
- Identify deficiencies
in mechanical ventilation technique that can cause lung injury
- Discuss the different
available surfactant therapies reviewing efficacy, mortality rates and pharmacoeconomic
data
- Improve methods to
hasten delivery of PEEP in their center (if necessary)
- Delineate the three
intervention arms of the DRM trial as well as other interventions for resuscitation
of very low birth weight infants
- Explain the differences
in opinion behind early surfactant administration versus the CPAP, watchful
waiting approach and establish their own evidence-based stand
